Men, Women, Guys and Dolls

December 29th 2006 16:23
Do you have time to curl up and watch some good movies over the holidays? Do you want to share some family time with those you don’t see that often, without arguing about politics?

How about re-visiting movies you remember fondly, without commercials. Not interested in watching a movie just because it’s the recent buzz? Want something a little more human and substantial? It’s kind of like food, new recipes are fun, but sometimes you just want a juicy steak. For your dining pleasure, please consider and possibly rent or buy the following:

It Happened One Night

I recently saw this 1934 classic road movie from start to finish, and was happily surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Sexy, smart, fun. People and society have changed, and they haven’t. Nowadays some women are lean and have well-developed biceps, and in some ways, we’re still just guys and dolls.

Casablanca
1942
It’s amazing. I have no idea how many times I’ve seen this movie over the years, yet, if I’m walking through a room where someone is watching this classic, I get caught up in it again. Was Ingrid Bergman really that effortlessly gorgeous? Was Humphrey Bogart really that casually cool? For an emotionally charged look at men and women in love, before metrosexuals and Laura Croft, sit down with a drink and enjoy this affair.

The Women
1939
If there aren’t any guys around, this movie is still a lot of fun for gals. We all know these women. Among my favorites in this still sharp, insightful, and funny movie, is the often under-rated but witty and beautiful Paulette Goddard. The more things change.........

Enjoy.

New Harry Potter Book Title

December 22nd 2006 16:44
Spoiler alert!

Here are the instructions for getting the new Harry Potter book title, if you'd like to enjoy some time with your little one, discovering the title.

But, my current internet connection didn't allow me to test these instructions, so, the title is included at the bottom of this post (alert, alert!)

Go to JKRowloing.com ,click on the eraser (didn't come up on my screen).

Clicking on the eraser takes you to a room where there's a window, mirror and a door. Reflected in the mirror is a hallway, where you click on the doorknob that is farthest away.

You should see a Christmeas tree. Now, ignore that and click on the center of a door next to the mirror, and a wreath should appear.

Click on the top of the mirror to see a garland. Once the garland has appeared look for a cobweb next to the door.

Click on it and it should disappear.

Next look at the chimes in the window. Click on the second chime to the right, holding down the curser. The chime will turn into a key, which will open the door.

Now, mouseclick on the wrapped gift behind the door, click on it and you can figure out the title of the new book by playing a game of hangman.

Whew!!

Final spoiler alert!

If you don't have time, or these instructions are incorrect, here is the supposed new title for the final Harry Potter book:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows".

Hope your little ones enjoy the game if you do give it a try

Rocky Balboa

December 20th 2006 17:38
Reviews of the new Sylvester Stallone movie, Rocky Balboa, have been generally good. The movie opens today.

The film clips I've seen are good, with Stallone's performance and writing seeming to approach the original, of which I am a fan.

Might be worth your time & money.

San Francisco Chronicle correspondent Hugh Hart interviewed Stallone, who said:

"Rocky V reflected my lack of focus at the time, which translated onto film almost like a CAT scan of where I was. That movie defeated all the other 'Rockys,' and it bothered me because people had been so loyal to that character."

Why did Stallone write certain events into the new movie?

"You have to pull a man's heart out and take away the thing he loves the most in the world so he plummets to the depths of despair. "

Not to worry, Rocky will rise from despair and into the ring in the new movie. Which, if it is at all like the others, will have some memorable fight sequences. And maybe a message of hope.

Gazing at Gibson, Depp, Damon & Stallone

December 17th 2006 18:09
IFilm.com has a nice, new clip from the film Apocalypto, almost 10 minutes long.

Uunfortunately, I am still living the saga of debates between Earthlink and AT&T and my dsl service, since moving, so I cannot comment on the pace of the film, or other aspects.

Three hit movies on DVD to consider for the Holidays.

The second installment of Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Man's Chest, although earning over half a billion dllars worldwide (wouldn't that come in handy while shopping this year), received mixed reviews. But many fans, while enjoying this installment, are also very much looking forward to part three, which will feature Keith Richards as Captain Jack Sparrow's father. I can't help it, I start laughing just at the thought of seeing those two together on the screen.

Holiday Movies?

December 7th 2006 22:33
Early reports on two very different movies might mean you want to take a pass on either, or both, of them.

The Nativity has opened in the US to lukewarm reviews and box office. Early word on this film is that it is respectful, but plodding and uninspired; an unimaginative re-telling in the

Mel Gibson's Apocalypto

December 2nd 2006 17:27
In about a week Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto will be released. So, do folks attend what may be, according to early reviews, in Rolling Stone ("a film of blunt provocation and bruising beauty -- it's breathtaking to watch a jaguar racing in the jungle alongside the man who is named after the beast. Say what you will about Gibson, he's a filmmaker right down to his nerve endings."), and at Cinema Strikes Back, and implied by the official website, here, a masterpiece. Or, do they stay away because of the director’s personal behavior? All of this is made even more topical because of the recent conduct of actor and comedian Michael Richards, of the Seinfeld show, on stage recently at a Los Angeles comedy club.

Originally, I didn’t really have much interest in Mr. Gibson’s previous film, The Passion of the Christ. When it was released I heard the controversy. Both sides having those advocates who were thoughtful, and those who were belligerent. I’m older, and old school. Religion is personal business, unless someone is physically hitting you with it. It was when my daughter had seen the movie and asked me questions about the telling of the story that I finally saw the film

If you are intensely waiting for anything Harry Potter, until the next film comes out, here are a couple of sites that might help. Sunrise managed to get interviews with a number of the stars, and some scenes. And here is an extra long movie trailer
video, almost 4 minutes
