Peter MacNicol, Adding 24 to His Numbers
January 2nd 2007 21:02
Many movie actors have been finding success, and staying power, on the television screen, in lead or supporting roles. I am fond of ensemble television, so I am a fan of this cross-over.
Whether it is Martin Sheen in The West Wing, Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City (also with the somewhat - allegedly- combustible Kim Catrall), or a perhaps lesser known actor such as Peter MacNicol, currently of the popular show Numbers.
In 1981 Mr. MacNicol starred in the well-written movie Dragonslayer, a film which current screenplay authors might want to consider viewing prior to writing their next fantasy. Dragonslayer had a plot, interesting characters, and humor.
Mr. MacNicol plays the charater of physicist Dr. Larry Fleinhardt on Numbers, and he's about to, literally, go into outer space. This permits an already attractively quirky show to add another element, and permits Mr. MacNicol to spend some time on the new season of the television drama, 24.
Supposedly, Mr. MacNicol is to be welcomed back to Numbers after his stint on 24.
I hope so, since he is persuasively intelligent on Numbers and adds, for me, a necessary whimsical, thoughtful perspective to almost every episode.
Numbers will have to do some extraordinary casting and writing to make up for his absence. Since it is the only program I know of on television starring a math professor, I would hate for it to be spoiled, and driven off the air, by this cast change.
However, congratulations to Mr. MacNicol for his opportunity on 24, and hopefully, to his return on Numbers.
