Don Cheadle, A Glimpse
March 13th 2007 15:31
Bob's just finished watching Hotel Rwanda (while seeking detente with his computer, after a week of less than perfect negotiations). As I heard, in the background, the haunting music from that sorrowful and inspirational movie, I felt I had to write to get it out of my system.
But, Don Cheadle is surprisingly difficult to write about, as a celebrity, unless you're willing to go only with the bawdy, irreverent interviews with co-stars on the Ocean series of movies, or, at the other opposite view, Mr. Cheadle's work, primarily with George Clooney (but also Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie) in attemting to bring world participation on condemning the atrocities in Darfur.
Trying to find the man in between has been difficult.
He has extraodinary range, from the cop in Traffic, to the supporting role (as an Angel!) in Family Man with Nicholas Cage, to the ordinary, brave hotel manager in Hotel Rwanda.
Here is a glimpse of him, with Nick Cage in the Family Man at YouTube Mr. Cheadle was nominated for an Academy Award for Hotel Rwanda.
He told the BBC
"I've never been a part of a film before that offers such a platform into real issues, that raises social awareness and has the potential to change things. I say potential because I don't really hold out a lot of hope that any film can do that. I hold out hope, but don't really have high expectations.
"But do you feel more frivolous films have their part as entertainment to?
"Absolutely. I understand what's it like to work all week and on Friday night just want to go and leave your brain at the door, buy some popcorn and be thrilled by something. That absolutely has a place as well.”
Here's a clip from Comedy Central which permits him to promote the film, while still exchange humor with Jon Stewart.
His new movie, being released in the States at the end of this month is Reign Over Me starring Adam Sandler. And it is not a comedy either, although it looks as though humor is found there.
And, Ocean's 13, with Al Pacino joining the huge cast of well-known actors, will be coming out soon.
Meanwhile, Mr. Cheadle will remain less well publisized the Brad and Ben and George, builiding an impressive body of work, and going home from his workday to his wife and children.
Hoefully, as he has said, to get more good roles that Will Smith has turned down.

I know what you mean. He's been around awhile, and, I think, such a good actor in any genre, but...
Don't know if you saw it, but he did a hilarious commercial for the Superbowl. Over the top, very cool.
Talented guy.
