Ghostrider

February 22nd 2007 23:23
Well, I wanted to go see this movie, but, now I just don’t know. Like everyone else, I have to pay for these tickets.

The The LA Times, while liking most of the parts where Nick Cage is involved, also says:”The film spends its first hour slipping gears as if its clutch were bedeviled. Moaning clichés haunt every cranny, from the worn-out dialogue to the uninspired cinematic language (the fateful moment staged at an actual crossroads, etc.).”

TV Guide says “Good pulp fiction is driven by the truths beneath the conventions. Prefab junk runs on contempt for fans, with a layer of goodies and gimmicks on top.”

The Onion says “A few days ago, Ghost Rider star Nicolas Cage made news by defending his appearance in a film based on a comic book by summoning up names like Goethe and Thomas Mann, and talking about comics' potential to reintroduce timeless themes in a "pop-art contemporary manner." And he's absolutely right. Or he would be if he were talking about Batman Begins or the Spider-Man series, recent comic-book adaptations that got both the spectacle and the depth right. But he couldn't have been talking about Ghost Rider.”

That strikes home. I really liked Batman Begins and the Spider Man movies. They had it all, compared to the overly solemn Superman Returns. I kept waiting for Superman Returns to be fun.

I want to see eccentric, complicated heroes, male or female, involving me in their story, knocking my socks off with dazzling special effects. I do not want a vapid movie that assumes that because I like this genre, I’m dumb.

I think I’ll save my money and see it on dvd. If I’m wrong, I’ll admit it. But, if anyone has already seen this one, please leave a message. Was it worth your cash??
