Michel Crichton, Maverick, & Jurassic Park IV
March 4th 2007 16:24
I recently saw, currently free on Google Video, and MichaelCrichton.com, a fun interview of Michael Crichton by Charlie Rose. Mr. Crichton is continuing to promote his newest book, Next, published in November, ‘06. The program originally aired on February 17, 2007, on PBS.
The two men obviously like one another, however, there was real heat in the questions and answers over global warming. Mr. Crichton is a maverick in the current environment (pun intended) which supports Al Gore’s position of catastrophic consequences, as portrayed in An Inconvenient Truth. It is ironic that Mr. Gore was originally the maverick, when the movie was first released. Mr. Crichton likes Al Gore personally, but when pinned down by Mr. Rose’s questions, had to admit that he disagreed with the data which was the foundation for the film.
Had Mr. Crichton made the documentary, it would have presented different questions, data, and possible conclusions.
Mr. Crichton supports all of the measures recommended by any responsible scientist, or world citizen, on preserving and protecting the earth’s environment. What he questions, as a scientist, is the validity of the data supporting the idea of imminent destruction of the planet’s climate.
Mr. Crichton is hard to ignore with his calm questions, and comments (and he has the most remarkable quality of staying absolutely still for a moment, so that you wonder if the video has stopped).
It is good news for fans that Mr. Crichton is rumored to be contributing to the newest entry in the Jurassic Park series, along with William Monahan and John Sayles as screenplay writers. The new film, set for release in 2008, is to be directed by Joe Johnston. This is a combination of styles and perspectives that bodes well for original ideas, rather than trite.
Mr. Johnston directed Jurassic Park III, as well as Hidalgo, the excellent October Sky, and the fast-paced Jumanji. Years ago he contributed to the visual effects in the Star Wars Series: Return of the Jedi, and The Empire Strikes Back, and the Raiders of Lost Ark.
John Sayles is the director and writer of the independent films Casa de los babys and Lone Star.
William Monahan just won an Oscar for his adaptation of the screenplay of Martin Scorcese’s The Departed, and the very good Kingdom Of Heaven.
Steven Spielberg is the executive producer for the project.
Here's the latest information I could find on the project. If you know more, please comment. This is a film I'm looking forward to!

In a February 2006 London Free Press article Frank Marshall announced that Jurassic Park IV "has a good script now, so we should have that one up and running next year for release in 2008."[2] Steven Spielberg, who directed the first two films in the series, was executive producer for Jurassic Park III and is slated to do so for Jurassic Park IV.

On October 5th 2006, Variety confirmed that Jurassic Park IV will be directed by Joe Johnston. [5]

3. Coma
4. The Carey Treatment
5. The Terminal Man
Must admit Runaway is a guilty pleasure but thats mainly because of Gene Simmons...

I loved Jurassic Park, (and parts of the sequels).... almost broke someone's hand in the theater when the dino's roared in the original....great sound system in an old movie palace that had been renovated...
Agree on Andromeda Strain, Westworld, Coma. Haven't seen Carey Treatment and Runaway is foggy for me (no age comments, please).....
The Terminal Man was very sterile for me, perhaps the intended effect. I felt like I was in a room where everyone, and everything, was frozen, without blood. Haven't seen it in years.
Intended effect, or just me?
Um, no comment on Mr. Simmons. More of an Ozzie fan.

Director Mike Hodges (Get carter) directed the Terminal Man witha cold sterile eye to reflect the emotionally detached world of a computer geek with homicidal tendancies. The endlessly clean enviroment itself is part of what causes him to kill, to make a mess.
I prefer the second JP with its king kong storyline a little closer to the original novel...though still not a fave of mine, the FX. cinematography and sound design are nifty.
Runaway starred Tom Selleck if that reminds you mor of the cheesy fun.

I think Mike Hodges may have succeeded too well, in his sterile environment, for me. But, I'll give it another shot because of your comments
Now that you mention the handsome Mr. Selleck, yes, Runaway is coming back....It was eclipsed that year by a B movie that broke out of it's genre and into the mainstream, The Terminator.
As to the Jurassic series, what can I say? I like monster movies. While I prefer Alien, or Alien Resurrection, to Godzilla vs. Mothra, (but not necessarily Godzilla vs. Bambi) I'll still have a Gozilla marathon playing in the background once a year. I can't help myself....
