The Chaser (Chugyeogja)

April 28th 2009 20:43
This year, the 33rd annual Cleveland Film Festival had over 140 full feature films, and I saw about 20 of them. My favorite movie out of those had to be The Chaser. The movie was a foreign film shot in South Korea. As with any movie that has culture and language barriers, The Chaser can be a little hard to understand in some parts. Nevertheless, The Chaser was an outstanding action packed movie filled with suspense from beginning to end.

The Chaser

Joong-ho Eom (Yun-seok Kim) is a former detective who now is a pimp. He has plenty of girls working for him when several go missing. Joong-ho is convinced that the girls ran away, but when he puts together that they have all been to the same customer right before their disappearance, Joong-ho thinks the girls must have been sold. He sends his best girl, Mi-jin Kim (Yeong-hie Seo), with this man in hopes of finding out where he sold his other girls to.

The movie dives right into its own suspense when we find out the man, Young-min Jee (Jung- woo Ha), is not selling the girls, but is actually a serial killer who is taking out his sexual inadequacies on the prostitutes. When Mi-jin Kim never comes back, Joong-ho goes looking for her but gets into a car accident. Seeing the blood and knowing the general area he is in, Joong-ho puts it together that the man involved in the accident is indeed Young-min, the man Joong-ho thinks is responsible for selling his girls.

Eventually after a scuffle, Joong-ho brings in Young-min to the police station. This leads to Young-min to admitting his killings. Over there however, one must have evidence within twelve hours of a confession in order to be charged with the crime. The Chaser takes its audience through twists and turns while the police are led on a wild goose chase by Young-min and Joong-ho becomes a detective again looking for Mi-jin.

The Chaser is an award winning movie, winning best editor at the 2009 Asian Film Awards; Jung-woo Ha was also nominated for best actor and Hong-jin Na for best screenwriter. The movie had an excellent plot, that was acted out beautifully. Watch The Chaser, you won't be disappointed.
