Valkyrie to be released on Christmas day

valkyrie

Nothing warms my heart more than an assassination movie on Christmas Day. I mean doesn't the plotting of a dictator's death behind his back just epitomize the holiday spirit? No? Well imagine that.

Aside from the fact that Valkyrie has Tom Cruise depicting the ringleader the group of Hitler's closest officers calculating against him, could MGM have picked a better way to guarantee this movie's demise than opening it on Christmas day? I think not. Now time may prove me wrong on this, but a dark World War II film premiering on the holiday celebrating the birth of the lord doesn't seem destined to be a blockbuster. But I may just be biased. I personally like my holiday season to be cheery and bright.

However, just to be fair here are what other critics have to say.

Variety -
"After a long takeoff, Valkyrie finally takes flight as a thriller in its second half but never soars very high... Cruise himself is a bit stiff but still adequate... [Valkyrie] has visual splendor galore, but is a cold work lacking in the requisite tension and suspense."

The Hollywood Reporter -
"Well-crafted historical thriller boasts fine performances but fails to probe the motives behind the plot to kill Hitler... Valkyrie is not the electric jolt [Tom Cruise] needs to jump-start [his career]."

Screen Daily -
"A serviceable if straightforward thriller... the film compensates for a lack of verve and action with solid production design and crisp performances from its cast. ...Singer misses key opportunities to inject a little energy and visual flash into the story, as exemplified by a clumsily-staged arrest sequence late in the film."

So, this one I leave up to you. Whenever, if ever, you choose to see this film (and hopefully not on Christmas Day) let me know if it is actually worth my $5 bucks to rent when it comes available at the video store.

This makes me shudder, I would never dream of going to the movies on Christmas Day.

How miserable that would make me feel.

Yeah same with me but apparently there are a lot of people who do. I guess once the presents are opened and they get bored and since everything else in the world is closed then it's movie theater time.

I saw Tom Cruise on the Late Show with David Letterman promoting his film Valkyrie. Tom Cruise is quite a charming man and a very engaging person.

I am keen to see this film , not because Tom Cruise stars in it, but because the plot to murder a dictator by those within his ranks and close to him sounds intriguing.
